IDP Camps
Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) number over 1.3 million living in 1,300 camps that have sprung up across Port au Prince since the earthquake of January 12th. These camps range in size from several thousand people to an overwhelming 50,000 people in one camp. They lack the most basic human needs including shelter, food, water and healthcare. Security is a huge problem in the camps and sexual violence is widespread. Young girls represent the most vulnerable population living in the camps, victims of sexual attacks and constantly worried about their welfare, safety and their own survival.
